Analyse satellite data of hurricanes and explore descriptive statistics

Regularly causing major global destruction, hurricanes are intense storms with devastating winds. Space-enabled data allows us to observe, monitor, and track hurricanes from a safe distance. Although easily accessible, large volumes of satellite data have been left untouched due to a lack of skilled data analysts.

On this course, you’ll explore the key concepts of data science required to process, analyse, and interpret large datasets. You’ll use tutorials and case studies to understand the possibilities within these datasets, and learn how to interpret satellite data beyond the course.

Skip to 0 minutes and 4 seconds [HEAVY WINDS ROARING]

Skip to 0 minutes and 14 seconds Each year hurricanes cost thousands of lives and hundreds of billions of dollars worth of destruction in their wake. And we have a team of highly trained and motivated scientists who are making use of the latest technology to track and predict the path of these hurricanes. Using satellite tracking data, we will show you how you can use this data to track and chart the progress of hurricanes and how to use that data to predict the path of upcoming hurricanes. We use data from a range of satellites to examine the Earth’s atmosphere. So this gives us a really good insight as to whether a hurricane is likely to intensify or weaken.

Skip to 0 minutes and 51 seconds In predicting hurricanes, we can coordinate relief efforts, evacuations, where to build shelters and most importantly, how we can save lives against the backdrop of these giant storms.
