Learn About Computer Science Online
Are you interested in an IT topic? Would you like to be a programmer and learn a programming language or get into web design? Or are you looking for a compact course about Microsoft Office applications such as Excel? Then you have come to the right place!
If you are already studying Computer Science but want to supplement or deepen your knowledge with online content, you will also strike it rich in our directory. Countless online courses, video lectures and MOOCs (massive open online courses) give you a wealth of choice for online learning.
Various Subject Areas in Computer Science
Computer Science consists of anything to do with computer systems and software. The various subject areas under it are often divided into:
- Theoretical Computer Science, which deals with topics like formal computer languages or complexity theory,
- Computer Engineering, which predominantly explores aspects around computer hardware (e.g., in computer architecture), and
- Applied Computer Science, examples of which are databases or the large area of business applications, e.g., the implementation of business processes in IT with so-called Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
Relevant video courses in many of these areas are already available (and the number is growing daily!).
Countless IT Courses From Top Institutions
Many of the online courses in Computer Science are offered by international MOOC platforms like Coursera and edX. Other well-known providers are Udacity or Codecademy. You could also look at offers from top universities (e.g., from UC Berkeley or from the MIT in Boston).
Many of the online courses already have a great number of international participants. A MOOC from Harvard, which offers an introduction to Computer Science under the name "CS50" may well be the spearhead. This course is also one of the most popular on the Harvard campus as a regular course—the online version (via the MOOC platform edX) already has over 1 million participants worldwide!
Just compare different courses in your area of interest (you can get further information on each course’s relevant page) and then choose the course that suits you best.
