If you are in your final year of school, you are probably wondering how to get into a good university. Maybe, you are also thinking about applying for college scholarships.

To be considered a strong candidate, you need to write a winning personal statement. Showing some deep reflection and long standing commitment to your chosen subject will make your personal statement stand out.

Online courses (also known as MOOCs, or massive open online courses) are one way to demonstrate this to your admission tutor. Providers such as CourseraedX and Futurelearn give you the opportunity to study almost every subject as a short online course.

And the best news is, it's free of charge! Fees arise only if you want to obtain a certificate.

The courses are provided by renowned universities including Harvard, MIT and Oxford.

Taking a MOOC will give you a real taste of what your degree will be like. Going to university is a big investment and you do not want to make an uninformed choice.

Some MOOCs take only a few hours to complete, others a few weeks. By setting aside one hour every day you can look into different subjects and then decide which one of them interests you so much that you want to pursue it at university.

Also consider getting a certificate. They are usually not very expensive. Being able to show that you passed an online test and obtained a certificate may impress the admission tutor even more and help you get into university or win a college scholarship.
